New coach Steve Davenport announced the hires Monday. Mathis, a college All-American who set the Division 1 record for most receiving yards at New Mexico before going onto a career with the Jets, Falcons, and Steelers, will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach. Mathis isn’t the only coach with NFL experience joining the squad. William Bell, who played on Georgia Tech’s 1990 national championship team before going on to the NFL’s Washington Redskins for two years, was named running back coach. Bell joins the team from Edward Waters in Jacksonville, where he held a number of coaching positions. Three other former Georgia Tech players round out the staff hires. Thomas Balkcom will coach the defensive backs, Greg Lester will the assistant head coach and outside receivers coach, and C. Angelo Wyatt will serve as the linebackers coach for the Tigers.

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State head football coach Steve Davenport announce the additions of Saeed Khalif, Tony Haynes and Broderick Jones to the Tigers coaching staff.
Khalif will serve as defensive coordinator/defensive line coach, Haynes will mentor the quarterbacks and Jones will coach the offensive line.
Khalif comes to SSU from Central High School in Newark, New Jersey where he was head coach (2009-10). From 1999-2005, he coached in the metro Atlanta area as a defensive coordinator at Redan High School (1999-2002) and Decatur High School (2003-05).
After graduating from East Orange High School in 1983, The New Jersey native was a three-year letterman at Georgia Tech (1985-87) where he was team captain. In 1987, he was the team's leading tackler, named All Atlantic Coast Conference, Defensive Most Valuable Player and was an honorable mention All American. He graduated from Tech in 1988 with a degree in industrial management. He signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos in 1988.
Haynes joins the Tiger family after working for three years as a graduate assistant at Alabama-Birmingham. Before working at UAB, he was at Blinn Junior College where he held the position of quarterbacks and receivers coach as well as the recruiting coordinator. Haynes played quarterback and wide receiver at Webber International University from 2000-03. He became the quarterback coach at Webber in 2004. Following the 2004 season, Haynes worked at Valdosta State where he served as an offensive graduate assistant coach for two seasons. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2005 from Webber. Haynes is a native of Lakeland, Fla. and graduate of Kathleen High School. Jones comes to Savannah State from Benton Express in Atlanta where he was an account executive since 2009. Before that he was a merchandiser at General Wholesale and a sales rep at Central Transport, both in Atlanta.
A native of Lithonia, Georgia, Jones graduated from Redan High in 2000and attended Morris Brown for a year. He then transferred to Copiah-Lincoln Community College where he earned an associate's degree. He played for two seasons at Ole Miss as an offensive lineman and graduated in 2005 with a degree in political science.
